96 private jets flying to Jeff Bezos’ wedding will emit more carbon than 27,300 cars do daily

Jeff Bezos’s wedding is going to be a monumental event, but so will be the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.

There’s nothing like the glitz and glam of a celebrity wedding. There’s A-listers, billionaires, and décor that would make anyone jealous. However, there’s something a little different between the Amazon CEO’s wedding and one that you’d find in your home state: the use of private jets.

Bezos’ and Lauren Sanchez’s upcoming nuptials has already caused controversy over the cost, and fact that protesters have

been unhappy with him allegedly ‘renting’ out the entire city. And now, his emissions are on the hit list.

Bezos and Sanchez became engaged in May 2023 and are now set to tie the knot this week, as per reports.

The pair are said to be marrying in Venice, Italy, on June 27, with the likes of Katy PerryOprah Winfrey, Mick Jagger, and Ivanka Trump expected to attend their wedding.

Last year, it came to light that they would be spending $600 million on their nuptials, but the Amazon founder refuted these claims.

New reports have instead suggested that Bezos and Sanchez could be spending between $15 million to $20 million, per Mail Online.

That’s a lot of money.

Thankfully, it probably doesn’t include private car hires for their guests, as there are a lot of people choosing to fly in the sky to the idyllic wedding.

While most people drive, or fly commercially across state, Bezos’s pals will be jetting off from all over the world in their own privately owned planes, which have now been calculated to emit the same amount of carbon dioxide emissions as 27,300 cars produce daily.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons (4600 kg) of CO2 per year, and if you do the working out, you’ll see just how much that comes to each day.

Now, if you’re bad at math, I’ll do it for you, so you can put your calculator away.

4600 kg divided by 365 days of a year is 12.6 kg daily emissions.

According to the Italian publication Affaritaliani, around 96 private jets are set to land at the city for the three-day event.

A 2024 study which looked into private aviation and its contributions to climate change reported that ‘private aviation contributed at least 15.6 Mt CO2 in direct emissions in 2023, or about 3.6 t (tonnes) CO2 per flight’.

So, if we take 3.6 tonnes of CO2 created by one flight and multiply it by the 96 planes expected to fly to Bezos’ wedding, you’d get 354 tonnes (or 345,000 kg).

If each car produces 12.6kg, and a plane produces 345,0000kg, all we need to do is divide the planes’ CO2 by a car’s daily CO2, to find out how many cars it would take to produce the same level of CO2.

Does that make sense? It should.

345,000kg divided by 12.6kg is 27,300 cars.

When you think about it, that’s a hefty amount of CO2 for 3-day celebrations.

The cost of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s upcoming nuptials has been ‘revealed’ and, as you’d probably expect, the pair are seemingly going all out.

Bezos and Sanchez got engaged in May 2023 and are finally set to tie the knot this week, according to reports.

The duo are said to be marrying in Venice, Italy, on Saturday (June 27).

Many A-listers are expected to attend their wedding; from Katy Perry and Oprah Winfrey, to Mick Jagger and Ivanka Trump.

Last year it was reported that the pair were spending a staggering $600 million on their nuptials, but the Amazon founder later refuted these claims.

But new reports have suggested that Bezos and Sanchez could be forking out anywhere between $15 million to $20 million, per Mail Online.

Speaking on this large sum, Kunal Madan, the CEO and Founder of DressPreservation.com, and Zoe Buke, from Hitched.co.uk, said it’s likely that the famous pair will pay as much as much as $5 million for a private set from a high-profile performer like Beyoncé or Andrea Bocelli.

Then there’s transport. Sanchez and Bezos are rumored to have invited 200 guests to their wedding, all of whom will need help getting to their wedding.

Madan shared: “Private jet travel for clients, superyacht transfers, or helicopter landings, transport arrangements for A-listers can vary from $500,000 to $2 million, depending on security and logistics.”

Buke added that the couple’s high profile guests will probably be put up in luxury 5-star accommodation.

Then, of course, there’s Sanchez’s dress, the cost of which ‘can easily surpass $1 million’, say the experts.

“Couture wedding dresses alone run $500,000 to $1 million, not to speak of a one-off haute couture wedding dress by Dior, Valentino, or Elie Saab, and with several wardrobe changes,” said Madan. “Accessories, custom suits for Bezos, and styling personnel drive it up.”

Buke also pointed out that the couple’s fits are likely to be bespoke. According to The Telegraph, Dolce & Gabbana is the favorite fashion house for Sanchez’s dress, while Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, and Givenchy may also be in the running.

Other things noted in the round-up of costs include floristry and decor, photography, catering, wedding favors, and a wedding planner.

Reportedly, they are sourcing some 80 percent of their wedding provisions from Venetian vendors as a way to share their appreciation for the city, says PA.

While the celebrity couple and their guests will be excited about the pending wedding, not everyone is pleased.

The lavish affair has attracted the attention of protesters, who on Thursday (June 19) hung a banner on St Mark’s bell tower with Bezos’s name crossed out.

They cite the risk of disruptions in a city so overrun with mass tourism that officials are for a second year requiring day-trippers to pay a tax to enter on key summer days.

Alice Bazzoli, an activist with No Space for Bezos, said to Sky News: “[Bezos] is basically going to treat the whole city as a private ballroom, as a private event area, as if the citizens are not there.”

Federica Toninelli, another activist associated with No Space for Bezos, added: “This is not what Venice needs. This is not what a city that is already suffering from overtourism needs.”

Jeff Bezos reveals his daily ritual that helped lead to his success

The Amazon founder and CEO isn’t ‘as productive as you might think’

It turns out Jeff Bezos has a similar start to the morning as the rest of us, minus waking up with anxiety about the cost of living crisis, that is.

Let’s be real here, it would take you a shockingly long amount of time to ever be as rich as Jeff Bezos – there’s even an equation to break it down for you – and it’s questionable as to if any of us would even want to be billionaires in the first place.

However, should you want to channel a bit of the Bezos in a bid to climb the path of success, then there’s one daily ritual the Amazon CEO and founder abides by that he attributes to helping get him in the right mindset.

Should you want to try and be the sort of person to be on track to have a net worth of over $200 billion dollars, yet not allegedly be capable of taking the trash out, then Bezos has you covered.

During an appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast in December 2023, reflecting on how he’s stayed so productive and reached such a level of success, Bezos explained he dedicates some time every morning of every day to a certain ritual.

And it’s called ‘puttering time’ – no, it’s not anything to do with golf.

Instead, ‘puttering time’ for Bezos is time to wander around and relax before getting on with his day.

This might sound strangely normal and Bezos acknowledged: “I’m not as productive as you might think I am.”

He explained it’s the ‘first’ thing he does when he gets up in the morning, going for a ‘putter’ grabbing a coffee and just ‘slowly mov[ing] around’.

“I do believe in wandering,” he added. “And I sort of read my phone for a while, I read newspapers for a while, I chat with Lauren [Sánchez] , I drink my first coffee. I move pretty slowly in the first couple of hours.”

What’s more, maintaining his billionaire status also rides on having a good night’s sleep, Bezos going to bed ‘early’ and getting up ‘early’ too, noting in his 2020 book he needs ‘eight hours’ in order to be more proactive and feel as well as he can overall.

Bezos’ wife Lauren Sánchez added in an interview with PEOPLE her ‘favorite part of the day’ is her mornings with Bezos, able to have a ‘magic moment’ just ‘talking’ together without the distractions of phones or their kids having woken up yet.

Despite Bezos saying he sometimes scrolls on his phone, Sánchez notes not going on their phones is ‘one of the rules’. “He definitely made that rule,” she added.

It not only helps Bezos get in a clear headspace to start the day, but ensures he and Sanchez have some time ‘just [them] for as long as [they] can’.Featured Image Credit: Alex Wong/Getty Images / Phillip Faraone/Getty Images for WIRED25

While it might take you or I a lifetime – and then some – to afford the jet, it’s on sale for just tiny percent of Bezos‘ $220.3 billion net worth.

The Amazon founder’s Gulfstream G650ER was spotted on aircraft marketplace Controller by aviation enthusiast Jack Sweeney.

He shared details of the listing on Twitter.

Registered N271DV, the jet was purchased in 2016 for around $65 million.

It has flown some 224 hours across 73 flights this year alone, costing an estimated $677,000 in fuel and emitting about 1,100 tons of carbon, according to JetSpy data.

The listing photos show off the jet’s exterior, including its almost 100-foot wing-span, as well as its luxurious interior.

The tan-and-white cabin features enough single seats and couches – hand-crafted, of course – to accommodate up to 16 passengers.

Converting into beds, they offer the utmost comfort needed for those longer journeys.

The G650ER doesn’t skimp on scenic views either, with sixteen panoramic oval windows, the ‘largest in aviation business’, according to its website.

And would it really be a private jet fit for a billionaire without meeting rooms, restrooms and TVs on board?

Another added enhancement is Gulfstream’s clean air system, which delivers ‘100 percent fresh air every two to three minutes’.

Its air-ionizing technology also ‘neutralizes allergens and viruses’ – enough to make your blood boil the next time you’re squeezed in between two strangers in economy class.

As per Business Insider, Federal Aviation Administration data shows the jet is registered to holding company Poplar Glen LLC. Washington state records from 2004, when the firm was created, show that Bezos owns the company.

Bezos purchased a Gulfstream G700 for $80 million in August, which boasts an updated wing and improved Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines in comparison to the G650ER.

He also owns another G650ER and a Pilatus PC-24.

But it’s not always been about the flashy purchases for the third-richest man in the world.

He is perhaps, in some ways, more humble and you’d assume: Bezos reportedly continued to drive his 1997 Honda Accord for years after becoming a billionaire, according to Brad Stone’s book The Everything Store.
