Darrick, a 42-year-old originally from Toronto, Canada, had relocated to northern Thailand to dedicate his life to the welfare of elephants. He met Kham Lha when she arrived at the Save Elephant Foundation in a dire state, having endured the brutal “crushing” process—a cruel training method used in Thailand’s elephant tourism industry. This inhumane practice involves tying up young elephants and beating them into submission to make them docile for tourists to ride. The scars, both physical and emotional, can last a lifetime.
“Kham Lha was in a really bad way when she came to us,” Darrick recalled. “She had been tied up and forced to undergo cruel training to prepare her for the tourist industry. We freed her and helped her recover. Over time, she became really close to me, and we formed an incredible bond.”
To demonstrate the depth of their connection, Darrick waded into the raging river, splashing and calling out as if in distress. Without hesitation, Kham Lha sprang into action. The young elephant tore through the turbulent waters, her eyes fixed on her friend.
