Wauconda fire officials said a person burning weeds is the cause of a tire fire in Island Lake Saturday evening.
Wauconda Fire Protection District Lt. Scott Schrayer said emergency crews were dispatched to the 100 block of West State Road near Roberts Road for heavy smoke at about 6:41 p.m. Saturday.
Upon arrival, fire crews saw a pile of motorcycle tires and a portion of a fence on fire.
He said the two engines that responded to the scene snuffed out the fire within 30 minutes.
Schrayer said the heavy smoke was produced due to the burning tires.
Schrayer said a person was legally burning weeds in the area and accidentally ignited something combustible, which spread to the tires and the fence.
“We are urging people to use extra caution when burning weeds on properties,” he said. “People should be aware of their surroundings and not burn weeds in areas where there are potentially other combustibles.”
