Pilots flying the Brazilian plane that crashed last month and killed all 62 people on board reported a failure in the aircraft’s de-icing system before it tragically spiraled to the ground, a preliminary report revealed.
The plane’s black box recorded a pilot stating that there was ‘a lot of icing’ two minutes before VoePass Flight 2283 crashed in Vinhedo, São Paulo on August 9, the Brazilian Air Force’s Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents said during a press conference.
The black box also indicated that the plane’s de-icing system, which is responsible for preventing ice build-up on the wings, turned on and off several times, the report found.
‘The crew members are commenting on failures in the [de-icing] system,’ lieutenant colonel Pablo Fróes said.
‘The first time, during the climb, we had the commander, the pilot in command, commenting via the CDR (communication system), that there was a failure in the airframe system.’

The findings may support investigators’ belief that the crash was caused by ice formation on the plane’s wings and failure of its de-icing system.
The flight took off from Cascavel Regional Airport at 11:46 a.m. in Cascavel, Paraná and was bound for São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo.
Cell phone footage showed the plane spinning in the sky before crashing into the backyard of a residence, killing 58 passengers and four crew members.
The turboprop airplane made a sharp turn and descended about 13,123 feet in under two minutes, according to aviation flight-tracking company Flightradar 24.
