Camp Mystic counselor Emma Foltz helps save 14 campers in Texas flood

Devastating flash floods in Texas have resulted in the loss of at least 81 lives across six counties, with one of the most tragic incidents occurring at Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ retreat located in Kerrville. There, 27 campers and counselors have been confirmed deceased, while several others remain unaccounted for.

The Guadalupe River rose dramatically following heavy rainfall, inundating cabins within minutes. President Trump has declared a major disaster, activating federal assistance as search operations persist.

Amid this tragedy, a tale of bravery has surfaced. Emma Foltz, a counselor at Camp Mystic and a senior at Louisiana Tech University, successfully guided 14 young girls to safety during the turmoil. Her prompt response in the face of rising waters has garnered national recognition.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry acknowledged her efforts on X, stating, “She played an instrumental role in helping evacuate 14 of her campers… Please join me in thanking Emma for her bravery.”

Camp Mystic expressed both sorrow and gratitude: “We ask for your continued prayers, respect, and privacy. May the Lord envelop us all in His presence.”

Survivor Amanda Sue Jones recounted to CNN that the flooding struck “like a wall of water,” leaving campers with little time to respond. Despite monitoring nearby tributaries, many were taken by surprise at the rapid deterioration of conditions.

Online, tributes to Emma Foltz continue to emerge: “You saved 14 little girls’ lives. That can never be repaid.”

As Kerrville grieves, Emma’s heroism serves as a testament to selflessness in the face of disaster—and a beacon of hope in the darkest of times.
