A sheriff who shot the local judge dead in his chambers was paranoid he was going to be murdered on the way to jail minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letcher County Sheriff Shawn \u2018Mickey\u2019 Stines gunned down Judge Kevin Mullins inside the county courthouse on September 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exactly why Stines killed his close friend soon after they had lunch together is a mystery, with only vague explanations from his lawyers so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shooting and the moments leading up to it<\/a><\/strong>, before Stines drew his gun and Mullins tried to hide behind his desk, were \ud835\udc84\ud835\udc82\ud835\udcca\ud835\udcf0\ud835\udc89\ud835\udcc9 on film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kentucky<\/a><\/strong> State Police arrested Stines minutes later and their attempts to interview him in the courthouse hallway were filmed on bodycam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the troopers didn\u2019t have any success as they spent the whole time trying to reassure a paranoid Stines that they weren\u2019t going to \ud835\udcc0\ud835\udcbe\ud835\udcc1\ud835\udcc1 him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I leave this building, I won\u2019t draw another breath,\u2019 he told them while handcuffed, his leg nervously shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stines was terrified of being transported to the Leslie County Jail, an hour\u2019s drive away, and begged to be locked up in the one next door instead.\"Letcher<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KSP Investigator Clayton Stamper reminded him that wasn\u2019t possible, as he had to be taken out of the county due to his position as sheriff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I\u2019ll never make it to the Leslie County Jail. Put me in the Leslie County Jail, I\u2019ll get killed there. I\u2019ll get killed in any jail,\u2019 Stines pleaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stamper, confused about why Stines was in fear of his life, asked why he thought the troopers planned to \ud835\udcc0\ud835\udcbe\ud835\udcc1\ud835\udcc1 him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Mickey, why do you think we\u2019re going to do something to you? Why would we wanna hurt you?\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Look, I know that this is obviously a very crappy situation, but I assure you we have no intentions of harming you whatsoever.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stines said he was worried the transport would stop along the way, and someone else would get in the car and \ud835\udcc0\ud835\udcbe\ud835\udcc1\ud835\udcc1 him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Come on, be fair to me now. I seen the look\u2026 Y\u2019all come on now, don\u2019t \ud835\udcc0\ud835\udcbe\ud835\udcc1\ud835\udcc1 me. Don\u2019t punish me, you know. Let\u2019s be fair. Don\u2019t shoot me, nothing like that, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stines had been a close friend to Mullins for around 30 years and the pair had even been seen dining together at a local restaurant for lunch just hours before the shooting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stines eventually settled down, but became more paranoid when the troopers tried to question him about the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Y\u2019all are gonna \ud835\udcc0\ud835\udcbe\ud835\udcc1\ud835\udcc1 me, I know you are. Let\u2019s just get it over with. Let\u2019s just go,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stamper eventually convinced Stines to go to the Leslie County Jail by agreeing to let Trooper Jason Bates, a former Letcher County deputy Stines knew well, be the one to drive him there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stines still appeared fearful and jumpy as he was led to the police car, peering around corners and scanning for potential threats everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troopers tried to question Stines during the drive, but he stayed quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stines\u2019 lawyers plan to present an insanity defense<\/a><\/strong> if the case goes to trial, claiming two weeks of intense stress drove him to murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Footage from just before the shooting showed Stines express concern about his family, and call his daughter from the judge\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also told officers seconds after the shooting: \u2018They\u2019re trying to kidnap my wife and kid.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defense attorney Jeremy Bartley issued a legal filing saying his client\u2019s state of mind at the time of the shooting would be key to his upcoming trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the case will hinge on testimony that Stines gave at a deposition for a lawsuit by Sabrina Adkins days before the September 2024 shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stines in that interview answered questions about one of his deputies allegedly sexually assaulting jail inmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An accuser in that case claimed that she was forced by a deputy sheriff to have \ud835\udc94\ud835\udc86\ud835\udc99 in Mullins\u2019 chambers for six months in exchange for staying out of jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bartley claimed Stines was concerned about backlash from his deposition testimony, which caused him to fear that his or his family\u2019s lives were in danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attorney claimed Stines\u2019 \u2018mental health\u2019 was affected by the perceived threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Ultimately, he was in fear for the safety of his wife and his daughter, and I think what you see there is the result of that,\u2019 he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stines, seen in his mugshot, pleaded not guilty to murder charges following his arrest, and his attorney has indicated that he plans to issue an insanity defense at trial<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adkins accused Judge Mullins of inappropriate behavior, claiming she had witnessed him engaging in \ud835\udc94\ud835\udc86\ud835\udc99\ud835\udc96\ud835\udc82\ud835\udc8d acts with women in exchange for special treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This lawsuit, filed in January 2022, claimed Mullins was involved in a \ud835\udc94\ud835\udc86\ud835\udc99-for-favors scheme within his chambers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adkins also alleged former deputy Ben Fields was involved, having filmed \ud835\udcbe\ud835\udcc1\ud835\udcc1\ud835\udcbe\ud835\udcb8\ud835\udcbe\ud835\udcc9 encounters, some of which reportedly involved Mullins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stines, a close friend of Mullins for about 30 years, was mentioned in the legal proceedings just three days before the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I think the deposition has several important roles in this case\u2026 it\u2019s going to be a large portion of the story we tell,\u2019 Bartley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
